January 27, Highway 176 @ Speeds Crossroad

SMFD firefighters responded to a reported single-car wreck at the overpass that spans the CSX railway outside St. Matthews.  The wreck was reported by a passing motorist that stopped to assist the victim.

When firefighters arrived, the victim was lying on the ground under a blanket.  He was complaining of pain in his chest area, probably the result of the Mercedes’ seat belt.  The wreck resulted in an airbag deployment.

The Mercedes Benz struck the bridge on US 176 in the westbound lane.  The car came to rest on the slope next to the overpass.  It is believed that the high concrete curb leading to the bridge may have kept the four-door sedan from plunging into railroad cut, which is roughly forty feet at the bridge.

Firefighters took control of the scene, working traffic control and assisting Calhoun County EMS with patient packaging.  The victim was transported by ambulance to TRMC.  The scene was then turned over to the SC Highway Patrol.
